Here is the real center of Polish diplomacy. Sikorski's house is a “soft force”

The parents of Radosław Sikorski bought a charming manor house in Chobielin in the late 1980s, shortly before the destruction of the Berlin Wall in Germany and the fall of the Polish People's Republic in Poland. Today, the politician and his wife Anne Applebaum spend a lot of time in it, if only a busy work schedule allows them. According to the Financial Times, this traditional Polish manor house has become a “unusual magnet for foreign dignitaries and highly set guests”. The British daily also emphasizes that this is a place that has become a kind of symbol of the reconstruction of the country after decades of communist rule.

Sikorski's house. Helicopters can land here
The roof covered with a red tile with the Polish flag at the top, a white portico on the front and a creamy facade, and in front of it a vast lawn, where helicopters can land – this is what Radosław Sikorski's house looks like in Chobelin, which was thoroughly renovated after the parents of the politician bought it in ruins and “at the price of bricks” [za równowartość 1700 dol. — jak przypomina “FT”]. It comes from the 19th century and earlier belonged to German landowners, who were also owners of nearby sugar factory. After World War II, the Polish People's Republic nationalized the property and transformed the Chobelin court into a farm.

Now the property includes Pond, tennis court, football field and fruit and vegetable garden. In one of the garages, next to bicycles, there is a historic motorcycle – BMW from the time of Wehrmacht, which still has machine guns and an ammunition box.
Chobielin – the center of the “soft” diplomacy
The house has almost always been a discreet place to develop both the internal policy of the country and diplomacy. Here, among others Sikorski met with Donald Tusk when he was considering returning to Polish politics after the end of his term of office in the European Council. He was also a visit here the prime minister of Great Britain Boris Johnson. As “FT” reminds, last year British Deputy Prime Minister David Lamma visited the manor house in Chobielin a few days after the nomination for the position of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Great Britain. Recently, Radosław Sikorski, in turn, welcomed the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andriy Sybiha. As the Polish minister told the British journal, Sybiha “had a great time”, watching copper plaques hanging on the wall of the lobby depicting Polish courts once located in the eastern areas, which are currently part of Ukraine.

History and politics are present in the manor at almost every step. In the bedroom on the first floor there are historical maps, showing how the Polish borders have changed, and in the library you can see old weapons and decorations. However, it is also internationally – the kitchen was designed by a studio from London, and the stove standing in it comes from France. In turn, in the case of the garden, the owners advised specialists from Canada.
– This house can contribute to the idea of Polish success and healing Poland from the nightmare of communism – says Radosław Sikorski, quoted by the “Financial Times”.
