The telephone dialogue between the president of the United States and his Russian counterpart lasted an hour and 15 minutes and took place at the initiative of the American side, according to TASS, which claims that the discussion began with an exchange of wishes on the occasion of the New Year. The conversation, Russia's state news agency says, focused on the war in Ukraine, possible solutions and future contacts between leaders in Washington and Moscow.
TASS has presented what it says is a summary of the main points of Trump's discussion with Putin, based on statements made by Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov.
Both the president of the United States and the president of Russia believe that the proposals made by Ukraine and the European Union are an attempt to prolong the conflict, TASS claims.
Trump admitted that the war in Ukraine proved to be the most difficult of the crises he faced, the Russian state news agency also claims. The American leader indicated that it is necessary to end the conflict as soon as possible.
According to TASS, the US president spoke about the prospects of economic cooperation between the US and Russia if the war in Ukraine ends.
Trump and Putin agreed to have another discussion after the US president's meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky.
In addition, the two “exchanged warm greetings on the occasion of the Christmas and New Year holidays and, of course, wished happiness to the peoples of the two countries”, Yuri Ushakov also stated, quoted by TASS.
Ushakov claims that the end of hostilities in Ukraine will be possible if Kiev takes a “bold decision” on Donbas, in accordance with the agreements between the US and Russia.
The Russian presidential adviser says that the regime in Kiev should make a decision on Donbas “without delay”, taking into account the situation on the front.
Trump-Zelensky meeting in Florida
After the talk between Trump and Putin, the American leader received his Ukrainian counterpart at Mar-a-Lago. The meeting is aimed at eliminating discrepancies from the original 28-point peace plan proposed by Trump last month and later revised by Ukraine to 20 points, according to CNN and the New York Times.
“We have the ingredients for a deal that's good for Ukraine and good for everybody,” Donald Trump said when he welcomed Volodymyr Zelenskiy to his Mar-a-Lago residence.
“We have no deadlines. My deadline is to end the war,” the US president added.
Trump confirmed he would call Putin after the meeting “and we will continue negotiations.”
