Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister, accused NATO and the European Union of using Ukraine to carry “a real war” against its country, in a speech on Thursday in the margin of the United Nations (UN) meeting, which the UK quickly cataloged as a “distortion of a fantasy world,” writes Reuters.

The head of Russian diplomacy made these statements during a UN meeting of Foreign Ministers in G20 countries, two days after US President Donald Trump, in a major rhetoric change, ridiculed Moscow's military performance and said he believes that Kiev could recover all his territories.

“Another clear example is the crisis in Ukraine caused by the West, by which NATO and the EU have already declared a real war against my country and they are directly involved in it,” said the Russian Foreign Minister.

Serghei Lavrov also made similar comments in the past, but their echo inside the United Nations building – in the context in which the speech was spoken in front of its colleagues, G20 foreign ministers – underlines the gravity of the moment.

Lavrov has made no reference to Trump's comments from the beginning of this week, instead reiterating the position of Russia that the actions of the West caused the Ukraine war, conflict started when Moscow forces launched a large -scale invasion in the neighboring country in February 2022.

The head of British diplomacy, Yvette Cooper, invoked Lavrov while he was preparing to leave, when she began her speech and condemned the “unprovocated aggression” war.

“No distortions of a false fantasy world, misinformation and propaganda from the Russian representative about the causes of the war will convince anyone,” Cooper said.

Russian forces are currently occupying about 20% of Ukraine's territory, and battles continue in the east of the country after more than three and a half years from the beginning of the large -scale invasion.

The head of Europe's foreign policy, Kaja Kallas, has appealed to the World Powers to continue to exert international pressures on Russia.

“There are no signs that Russia's goal of subjugating Ukraine has changed,” Kallas said.
