Five children suffering from other associated diseases died at the “Santa Maria” Hospital in Iași, after being infected with the Bacteria Serratia Marcescens, a nosocomial infection, reveals Ziarul de Iași. The intensive care section, where the children were admitted, was closed, after other patients were diagnosed with the same bacterium. An epidemiological investigation has been initiated.
The deceased children were newborns or were up to 8 years old and suffered from serious associated diseases: lightning meningitis, convulsive syndrome, Edwards, tetraparesis or epilepsy, writes the local publication 7iasi.
The first cases appeared more than a week ago, but the ATI section remained functional, and the hospitalizations continued, according to the local press. On Wednesday, on September 24, the section was closed for hospitalizations.
Ziarul de Iași requested a point of view both to the interim manager of the hospital, Cătălina Ionescu, as well as to the Iași Public Health Directorate.
Only DSP sent an answer in which “confirms that, following the notification received from the health unit, an epidemiological investigation was started regarding a possible outbreak of infections associated with the assistance with the Marcescens Serratia.”
“A mixed team of specialists from DSP Iași and CRSP Iași has moved to the health unit for evaluating the situation, analyzing medical documents and collecting biological evidence. They are under processing in the DSP laboratory, and the results will contribute to the clarification of the epidemiological context”, the representatives of the Public Health Directorate said.
DSP also states that the hospital “has initiated measures to limit the spread of the infection, according to the procedures in force. The investigation is ongoing, and the conclusions will be communicated to the competent institutions at the end of the investigation”.
