The floods caused the death of several residents of Texas in the south of the United States, local authorities announced, informing about missing people, including children, writes AFP, taken over by Agerpres.

The number of dead caused by the sudden increase in water level remains uncertain for the time being, explained in a press conference Rob Kelly, locally responsible in Kerr County, located in the center of Texas.

“We try to identify the deceased people,” he said, talking about the catastrophic floods that devastated the area due to heavy rains.

As for the children who participated in a summer camp, “we know that some are missing. But how many (…) we are not sure,” he added.

Rob Kelly emphasized the sudden nature of these floods in a region, however, with this type of phenomenon.

“We have floods all the time. This is the most dangerous river valley in the United States,” he said, referring to the Guadalu River, which crosses the area, but “I had no reason to believe it would be something like what happened here.”

According to the national ocean and atmospheric administration (Noaa), the level of the Guadalu River increased overnight, from two meters over nine meters, following the rains.

The meteorological service has issued a flood warning for the Kerr Center-South area, urging the inhabitants to avoid travel and those living near the Guadalu River to move “to higher areas”.

In mid -June, at least ten people died from floods in San Antonio, southern Texas, following torrential rains.
