“We live in such serious times that we must be careful not to say random things,” said actress Angelina Jolie, a winner of the Oscar, after being asked, at the San Sebastian Film Festival, about the division in American society and the dangers to freedom of expression.
American actress Angelina Jolie is located in Spain these days, where she participates in the International Film Festival in San Sebastian, to promote her next film, “Couture” (directed by Alice Winocour), and was inevitable to be confronted with political questions from the press, given the strained situation in the United States. And she did not avoid responding, when asked “what scares it” in this context, as an artist and as an American, the Rolling Stone magazine reports on Monday.
At the press conference at the festival, Angelina Jolie received the following question: “The United States is experiencing worrying times about freedom of expression. You are a free woman, who used her voice to support many causes. Why are you afraid, as an artist and as an American citizen?”
After a break in which he sighs deep, Jolie admitted that the question is a “very difficult” one.
“I love my country, only this time I no longer recognize my country,” replied the famous American actress. “I have always lived internationally, my family is international, my friends, my life … My vision of the world is egalitarian, united and international,” she explained.
“Anything, anywhere, which divides or limits the personal freedoms and expressions of anyone, I think it is very dangerous. We live in such serious times that we must be careful not to say random things. We live very, very difficult times,” concluded Angelina Jolie.
Although Jolie did not attribute the divisions of the American society to none of the parties involved in the debate, the Rolling Stone magazine recalls that, during his career, the star aligned to the left. She was the ambassador of goodwill for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) between 2001 and 2012, and from 2012 to 2022 was specially sent by UNHCR.
