The German police said on Monday that it had opened an investigation after finding cables cut on a railway line in the west of the country, a possible act of “political motivated” sabotage, Germany becoming extremely vigilant in the face of a growing number of sabotage attributed to Russia, AFP reports.
A Köln police spokesman said the police discovered on Sunday night, around 1:15, “several cables cut at Leverkusen Rheindorf”, a locality between Köln and Düsseldorf, causing significant disturbances in regional railway transport.
The police added that “a political motivation cannot be excluded at this stage.”
The damages brought to the public infrastructure have increased in recent months throughout the country.
Germany, one of the most fervent supporters of Ukraine in the invasion of Russia in February 2022, is extremely attentive to the Russian threat and accuses Moscow of carrying out sabotage operations in the hybrid war that Russia takes against the West.
Last week, German information services reported a new record of damage caused to the German economy through cyber attacks or sabotage documents in 2025, worth 289.2 billion euros, indicating that Russia and China would be behind these attacks.
On September 9, a fire at two electricity pillars in an area on the outskirts of Berlin left about 50,000 people and companies for several hours or days, the police suspected of being an intentional act.
At the beginning of September, the German authorities even launched an information campaign on the recruitment efforts of Russian secret services on social networks.
“Do not become disposable agents,” the German authorities warned, considering that Russia finds users on social networks to “carry out spy or sabotage activities in Germany or against Germany.”
