President Nicușor Dan said that it is still possible to designate a candidate for the position of prime minister during this week, invoking two main variants: either the nomination of a party leader or a technocrat outside the coalition parties.

According to political sources quoted by Digi24, the president will meet on Thursday with the leaders of the parties at the Cotroceni Palace, as well as with the members of the working group regarding the measures to reduce the budget deficit.

Asked in a press conference held in Odessa if it is possible to designate as a prime minister of a person who is a party member, without being the president of the party to whom he belongs, Nicușor Dan replied: “This option has not been advanced. There is the party leader, the rotation of the premiers or a technocrat.”

Invited to comment on whether, in the current context, it is possible to appoint a prime minister's candidate during these weeks, the president gave a prudent answer. “I said it is a possibility to appear this week, the possibility still exists, but it is not a promise,” said Dan.

The president said that the final form of tax measures would be adopted within nine days.

“As long as the technical teams discussed, about 50 hours, 60-80 possible measures have been reviewed. In principle some of them agreed, others said they are very sensitive and need a political vote in the parties and this was to happen yesterday,” said Nicușor Dan.

He gave assurances that the deadline of June 30 will be respected for sending to the European Commission the measures regarding the reduction of the budget deficit. They are sure we will do this, I think we are close enough with this. There are still a political discussion between leaders, but there are no great consensus issues. There are also some mechanisms of operation of the coalition, the report of the prime minister with the parties … The difficulty remains to cut some benefits that some social categories have, “said the president

Nicușor Dan avoided answering the question whether or not he supports progressive taxation, invoking the fact that he does not want to interfere with the debate on this subject.

Instead, he confirmed that among the measures discussed in the working group is the introduction of a solidarity tax. “There is this proposal, but that does not mean it will be adopted,” said Nicușor Dan.
