Jesus Plasencia traveled with his wife, Ana Maria Marcela Tavantzis, in November 2021, on American flight from Miami to Madrid, according to Business Insider. The court's documents show that, before take-off, the plase began to have severe symptoms: it temporarily lost its ability to speak and could not pick up your mobile phone. His wife immediately alerted a board attendant and the pilot, fearing that he was suffering from a stroke.
Instead of following the company's protocols – such as a doctor's consultation or requesting the help of a medical professional on board – the pilot ignored the alarm signals, joked with Plasencia and decided that the plane can take off, according to the complaint filed.
During the flight above the Atlantic Ocean, Plasencia suffered an stroke. Landed in Spain, the patient was admitted to critical condition for over three weeks, before being transported to the US with an air ambulance. Following the attack, Plasencia can no longer speak or write and require daily care, being dependent on his wife.
The couple claimed that if the crew had respected the medical protocols, the man could have been treated in time in a hospital in Miami, which would have increased his chances of recovery. Jurors have decided that American Airlines is guilty of negligence under the Montreal Convention, which regulates the liability of airlines on international flights.
