

Context
Lapin until the end of October 2022 commanded the grouping of Russian troops “Center” in the war against Ukraine. He underwent sharply in Russia after the Ukrainian army returned control of the estuary of the Donetsk region on October 1. Before that, Russian troops in this area were surrounded.
In January 2023, Lapina was appointed chief of the Ground Forces of the Ground Forces of Russian Armed Forces.
In March 2024, Lapin was headed by the recreated Leningrad Military District and the North group formed at its base. She was responsible for the Kharkov and Kursk directions.
In early August 2024, the military operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation began the defense forces of Ukraine. WSJ called Lapina responsible for the gaps in the Russian defense.
At the end of August 2025, the Russian Ministry of Defense reported that Colonel General Yevgeny Nikiforov became the new commander of the North group.
