In her opinion, it should not be surprising that the Polish president demanded war reparations, adding that it was a message primarily to his voters and PiS voters. “However, ignoring this issue by the German side would simply be reckless,” the daily added. He pointed out that, according to recent research, more than half of Poles support the claims of war reparations.
“TAZ” assessed that for many Poles an important gesture could be the payment of compensation by Germany to the last living Polish victims of World War II. “Berlin could pay at least a small part,” he emphasized.
“TAZ”: This “should give Nawrocki to think”
In the context of Nawrocki's earlier visit to the USA, the newspaper pointed out that Washington's restrained reaction to the invasion of Russian drones into the Polish airspace “should give Nawrocki to think”. “In the face of the growing threat from Russia (…) European countries, but above all Poland and Germany must closely cooperate in the field of military,” she added.
Nawrocki took his first official visit to Germany on Tuesday, where he talked with President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The center of conversations included security issues in the region, the future of the EU and Polish-German relations.
The thread of war reparations for Poland also sounded in Berlin. Nawrocki emphasized the need to compensate for Poland, adding that Germany could start paying off reparations by building the strength of the Polish army and at the same time the NATO eastern flank.
The German side upheld its previous position, declaring that the matter of war reparations is closed and legally regulated.
On the eve of Nawrocki's visit to Germany, the representative of the German government for cooperation with Poland Knut Abraham said that it is necessary to develop a new approach to historical responsibility towards Poland. He suggested that this could take the form of in -depth cooperation in the field of security.
