The European Parliament took a step on the recovery of over 4 million euros on Thursday, which the former far-right group in the European Parliament, identity and democracy (ID), would have abusively spent in the past legislature and which now the European institution's decision-makers are trying to impute to a new sovereignist group, Patriots for Europe (PFE), considering it to the former group, Described by the new PFE group as an absurd and politically motivated action, reports the EFE agency, taken over by Agerpres.
Boiled especially by Giorgia Meloni and Marine Le Pen, the European sovereign parties have made progress in the 2024 MEPs, but without succeeding in changing the relationships in the European Parliament. Pro-European progressive political groups, respectively popular (PPE), Socialists (S&D), Liberals (Renew) and Green, who formed a majority that supported Ursula von der Leyen for another mandate at the leadership of the European Commission, formed in parallel and “a sanitary cord” against the Eurosceptic parties that challenge too much power.
These Eurosceptic parties are now divided into three political groups in the European Parliament. We have the group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), which manifest moderate Euroscepticism, as opposed to the other two sovereign groups, respectively the Europe of sovereign nations (ESN) and patriots for Europe (PFE), the latter being created by Hungarian Prime Minister Vikor Orban.
In the last legislature, the identity and democracy group (ID) included far -right parties such as the French formation of Marine Le Pen, the Italian League of Matteo Salvini or the Austrian Freedom Party. After the elections of 2024 this group disintegrated and most of the parties in its composition entered the new Patriots group for Europe (PFE), where there are also parties that were not in the identity and democracy group (ID).
The final decision belongs to the management on
Invoking as arguments that in the PFE group the former secretary general of the former ID group, several officials and the “vast majority” of the MEPs who previously part of the ID were found, plus that the PFE group consisted of a few weeks after the DISTRAT, the Commission for budgetary control of the European Parliament asked the European Patriots to be required for about 4.3 by the euro spent by the former ID group.
These funds, about which the same Commission consider themselves to have been spent abusively, correspond to the allocations that the political groups in the European Parliament receive for their administrative and operating expenses, as well as for the information actions on their activity.
The request of the Commission for Budget Control will be sent to the Office of the European Parliament, composed of President Roberta Metsola and the 14 vice -presidents of the European Legislature, who will eventually make the decision.
The Patriots Group for Europe described this approach as “a witch hunt” meant to discredit the parties of this group and requested the publication of the expenses made by the other groups in the European Parliament, “so that everyone can check them.” “The absurd assertion that the patriots for Europe are the legal successors of the ID group is unfounded and politically motivated,” the sovereign group noted.
