“Cholera's largest epidemic in decades”. Sudan collapses

Darfur is Civil War Centerwhich has been going on in Sudan since April 2023. The region is almost entirely controlled by fast support forces – one of the sides of the war. Al-Faszir remains the last fortress of the other side-government troops.
According to the UNICEF report, over 600,000 escaped during the blockade from the city and the surrounding area. people, half of whom are children. Those who stayed are starving. Over 1 thousand Children were killed or injured as a result of fire, many were victims of sexual violence, kidnapping and forced recruitment to armed groups.
35 hospitals and six schools affected fire. The Saudi hospital for children and mothers was fired over 10 times. In January, a center was destroyed in the ABU Więka camp, which looks after starving children. Currently about 6,000 The youngest suffering from acute malnutrition have no access to therapy. At least 63 people died in one week due to malnutrition, mainly women and children.
It broke out in parallel in the region The cholera epidemic of the largest in decades. From July 2024, over 96 thousand were recorded. cases of incidence and 2.4 thousand deaths. Ok 100 dead are children. The filled camps lack clean water, and children are weakened by hunger, which is why the disease spreads very quickly.
UNICEF demands an immediate humanitarian break so that food and medicines can be supplied to Al-Faszir. The organization stated that it urgently needs $ 30.6 million. (at the current exchange rate approx. PLN 111 million) to fight cholera and ensure the population of clean water. In the near future, the delivery of 1.4 million doses of cholera vaccine is planned, but without suspension of weapons it cannot be realized.
Many years of war
The civil war in Sudan has been going on continuously since at least 1956, when the country gained independence from Great Britain and Egypt. Most of the population are Arab Muslims, but in the country there are also significant groups of non -Jewish and non -Muslim people – no regime was able to provide peaceful coexistence.
The predecessor of the current conflict is the war in Darfur. It began in 2003 from the creation of local peoples against compressing the Arabs. Arabs from Darfur formed a militia called Jandżawidzi. Then, the longtime dictator of Sudan Umar Al-Basir announced the creation of fast support forces (RSF)-in fact it was simply the legalization of the movement that transformed into the governmental death squadron.
The war in Darfur lasted almost 17 years, the number of victims reached hundreds of thousands, and refugees – millions. Regardless of this conflict, but under its influence, in 2011 South Sudan disconnected from the country – there is currently a civil war there.
In 2019, Umar Al-Basir was overthrown as a result of a military coup, organized jointly by the army under the command of General ABD Al-Fattah Al-Burhan and RSF under the command of Mohamed Dagalo (also known as Hemetti). For some time they shared power peacefully, but in the end it happened what was inevitable: Al-Burhan became the only military dictator, and Hemetti in April 2023 he raised against him rebellion.
Fight arenas
The RSF quickly took over the most important strategic facilities in the capital of Sudan, Khartoum: Presidential Palace, airport and military bases. One of the largest cities of Africawith over 5 million inhabitants, for a long time was the arena of constant fights, in which over 60,000 were killed. people. Al-Burhan's government fled to Port Sudan on the Red Sea. In March 2025, government forces reflected Khartum, but the country's leaders are not in a hurry to the capital.
Darfur – the traditional RSF fortress again became the next area of hostilities. At the same time, with the occupation of Khartoum, the forces began the offensive at the city of Al-Jaunajna-the capital of the Western province of Darfur, with about 0.5 million inhabitants. The Local Militia of the People opposed them. After a few months of fierce fights, RSF took Al-Jaunajna, followed by an ethnic purge.

Distribution of humanitarian aid in Al-Faszir, Sudan, August 11, 2025.
Native men were massively killed – not only shot, but also smoking alive. Thousands, if not tens of thousands of women and girls fell victim to rape, often collective – RSF, like the Jandżawi, consciously used it as a method of war.
In January 2025, the United States recognized RSF activities The genocide of the non -grace population of Sudan.
The situation is complicated by the fact that Other countries are regularly involved in the war in Sudan. Both sides of the conflict receive money from gold exports – usually illegal, bypassing sanctions. The main buyer and external sponsor of the RSF are the United Arab Emirates: they provide weapons under the guise of humanitarian aid, and even send foreign mercenaries to Sudan. Egypt and Türkiye help the Al-Burhan regime, providing him with a weapon.
Bloody statistics
The African Corps is also present in the country (formerly a private Russian Military Group Wagner company). In their time, the Wagnerists supported the al-Basir regime, and now they are trying to maintain neutrality and negotiate with everyone to be able to be continue to get gold. In the summer of 2023, the Al-Burhan regime received help even from Ukraine. In addition, they are involved in conflict in one way or another Saudi Arabia, Iran and Qatar.
As a result of a war that is still far from the end, About 150,000 were killed people. 4 million Sudanians became refugees – mainly in the neighboring Chad, South Sudan and Ethiopia. At the same time, internal armed conflicts are underway in each of these countries, food is lacking and epidemics often break out.
Another 14 million Sudanians became internally displaced people – refugees who did not cross the state border.
These people live in makeshift camps and feed mainly on bean soup. And not even every day: after the American administration stopped financing USAID, food rations have decreased significantly, and many kitchens were completely closed. Western countries, and above all the United States, apparently came to the conclusion that there is no hope for Sudan and just They lost his interest.
American journalist Anne Applebaum, who visited Sudan twice in 2025, writes in her essay published in the magazine “The Atlantic” that the war hit her special cynicism and nihilism. These features are characteristic of every war, but in this case the hypocrisy of both sides and the international community, constantly repeating words about the need for peace, justice and democracy, are particularly visible.
At the same time, none of them can or does not want to do anything in the name of these ideals – says Applebaum. In the absence of ideals, only interests remained – and the biggest role in Sudan is played by those who have them there.
