Milanović stated that “Gaza Zone occupation cannot be justified” and decided that the only fair solution is to recognize the existence of two countries – Israel and Palestine.
– Croatia should recognize Palestine as a step towards stopping the war and the humanitarian disaster in the Gaza Strip. Recognizing the law of the Palestinian nation to your own state is the only way to achieve a lasting peace in the Middle East, “said Milanović. He announced that he would strive for Palestine's recognition by Croatia as soon as possible and called the government to initiate a procedure in parliament.
Croatia with full support for the suspension of weapons
The Palestinian minister was also met by the Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković, who assured after the conversation that Zagreb strongly supports the immediate suspension of weapons in the Gaza Strip.
“We are in favor of immediate suspension of weapons, release of hostages, protection of civilians and undisturbed provision of the help of the injured population, especially for children” – wrote Plenković on Platform X.
He added that the Croatian government is invariably of the opinion that peace and safety in the Middle East can only be achieved by a two -state solution, in which Israel and Palestine will live next to each other “in peace, safety and dignity, within the limits of each other and international arena.”
Plenković reminded that Croatia has previously transferred almost three million euros to humanitarian aid, including a million euros for children from Gaza via UNICEF, and announced a new government decision about an additional million euros in favor of helping residents of the Gaza Zone.
Palestine currently recognizes 147–148 UN Member States – discrepancies in number are due to various degrees of formalization of diplomatic relations. In 2024, Ireland, Spain, Norway and Slovenia officially recognized the wave of protest against the war in the Gaza Strip, Palestine.
