Students who use public transport – both public transport and railways – are obliged to have and present their school ID to the possible control. There are many indications that this obligation can be a thing of the past.

Instead of an important – that is, a submemented or provided with a current hologram – an ID card would be enough or a passport – such changes are intended to be introduced by the Ministry of Infrastructure. Currently, the regulations require students to show the current extended ID to a given school year in the event of an inspection. On this basis, they can use reliefs for public transport or in turn.
How informs Onetthe ministry confirms plans to introduce new provisions that will confirm the age with an ID card or other identity document. The proposed changes are a response to a parliamentary interpellation of July 2025. According to updated regulations, children and young people would have the right to relieve communication on the basis of age, not a school ID.
No more showing the ID in public transport. Revolution for students
The changes announced by the Ministry of Infrastructure may be a great help for students. Especially in a situation where they do not have – for various reasons – a school ID, which they can show during the inspection.
As Onet points out, a new way of validation of the right to discounts on travel by public transport will not come into force immediately. Stage implementation of changes is expected. The ministry explains that priority will have relief in rail transport.

The announced solution regarding the lack of obligation to have a school ID in public transport would correspond to the situation in many European countries. It is also supported by the fact that in Poland there is an obligation to attend school until the age of 18. Therefore, in practice, all young people who use public transport are students of some educational institution.
