The US National Guard, mobilized in Washington, began carrying weapons on Sunday in the Capital, where over 2,200 soldiers were held to combat crime at Donald Trump's request, the Army announced.
“Starting with the end of the evening of August 24, 2025, the soldiers of the special common detachment in Washington DC (JTF-DC) have begun to carry the weapons,” this component of the American army announced in a statement.
These reservists are authorized to use the force only “as the last solution and only in response to an imminent death threat or serious bodily injury,” the document states.
President Donald Trump said Washington is “invaded by bands” and that these are necessary to “clean” it. The National Guard had already been mobilized in June in Los Angeles, at the time of important demonstrations against the migration policy of the federal government.
However, police statistics in the Capital show a decrease in violent crime between 2023 and 2024, even though this decrease occurred after a strong post-Covid increase.
Donald Trump has accused Muriel Bowser, the mayor of the city, of communicating “forged” figures, threatening to take over the total control over the city by the federal authorities.
Most of the herds of the National Guard mobilized in the Capital were sent by the Republican states of Western Virginia, South Carolina, Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana and Tennessee.
The reservists of the National Guard depend on each US state and can be mobilized only in case of national emergency, such as a natural catastrophe, at the request of the federal state and after the approval of the local governor.
They have no tasks of intervention against crime, riots or demonstrations.
In addition to these soldiers, FBI federal agents, Police with ICE migrants and Anti -Da DEA agency are also mobilized in Washington.
