Over 100,000 people want to get asylum in Great Britain. This is a record number

The British Ministry of the Interior (Home Office) informed on Thursday that during the past year, until June 2025, 111,084 people submitted a request for asylum in Great Britain. This is the largest number from the beginning of the statistics in 2001.

According to data published by the ministry, the number of applications increased by 14 percent. Compared to the same period ending in June 2024, the number of people applying asylum in the United Kingdom was 97 107.

The previous record within 12 months was 109 343 and was recorded in the period ending in March 2025.

Migrants who came to Great Britain after the La Manche channel illegally sailed on small boats accounted for 39 percent. the total number of people applying for asylum – the ministry said.

In British hotels from June 2024 to June 2025 a total of 32,059 people applying for asylum were temporarily accommodated, which is an increase in 8 percent. compared to the same period of the previous 12 months.

Home Office said that the expenses of the UK government regarding asylum seekers amounted to £ 4.76 billion in 2024/25, which is a 12 % decrease. compared to the record amount of 5.38 billion pounds in 2023/24.

This amount includes Direct financial support and accommodation of migrants, but does not apply to costs related to the capture by officers of people illegally beating the La Manche channel on boats and pontoons.
