The dream vacation of a Canadian tourist in Bali turned into a nightmare. Ashley had come to spend a few days on the Indonesian island before things took an unexpected turn, reports to Libre Belgique, quoted by News.ro.
One evening, she ordered a cocktail in a nightclub in Kuta. Believing that he was drinking a classic drink, she actually consumed a mixture of alcohol and methanol, Fox News reports. The young woman said that this explosive cocktail was blind.
“In developing countries around the world, methanol is often added to alcohol on the black market to increase the volume of liquid. It has the same taste and odor, but one glass can be fatal,” Ashley explained in a video posted on Instagram.
Canadian said he received the drink in a plastic bottle. “Loss of vision is the hardest attempt I have ever gone through. But I'm lucky: other tourists died after drinking methanol -diluted cocktails,” she confessed.
Once ingested, methanol becomes toxic and directly poisoning the body. WHO recommends tourists avoid illegal alcoholic beverages and avoiding any uncertain or suspicious product.
Asia has the highest prevalence of world methanol intoxication, according to the MSF database. It is a problem that often affects poorer countries, such as Indonesia, India, Cambodia, Vietnam and Philippines.
Last year, six tourists died after being served with alcohol, which also contained methanol, at the pension where they were staying in Laos.
