The Dutch Foreign Minister, Caspar Veldkamp, resigned on Friday, after, in the Government meeting, it was not possible to reach an agreement on sanctions against Israel, AFP reports.

“I see that I am not able to take significant additional measures to increase the pressure on Israel,” Veldkamp told the ANP agency, after debate in the cabinet on possible sanctions, which was stuck.

Last month, Veldkamp declared undesirable in the Netherlands on the far-right Israeli ministers Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

On Thursday, the minister stated that he wants to take additional steps against Israel, but later acknowledged that he did not trust that he could act effectively in the next weeks or months.

The minister said that the measures proposed by him were “seriously discussed”, but they were hit by the opposition in successive government meetings.

“I feel that I am constrained in establishing the direction I consider necessary as a foreign minister,” he said.

The Netherlands counted among the 21 states that signed a common statement on Thursday condemning Israel's approval of a major colonization project in the Cisiorordan, considering it “unacceptable and contrary to international law.”
