The contract of 2.1 billion lei was signed for the modernization of an important railway in the south of the country

CFR Infrastructure announces that the contract for the complete modernization of the Bucharest – Jilava – Giurgiu Nord Border was signed. The value of the contract is 2.1 billion lei, excluding VAT, and 30 months are allocated to the execution of the works.

From Bucharest to Giurgiu there are two variants of the train by train: the one that will be modernized (via Progress – Comana) and the one bypassed (on Videle). A road that by car is made in an hour, lasts well over two hours on the railway. 25 years ago, the fastest trains were making an hour and a half from Bucharest to Giurgiu. Since 2005, international trains to Bulgaria and Turkey bypasses Videle, so the Bucharest – Sofia road lasts over ten hours.

The public procurement procedure was awarded by the association of Railworks, consisting of Arcada Company – Association leader – and Alstom Transport SA has now signed the design and execution contract. The winning offer had been announced in January by CFR SA.

93 km will be modernized, the purpose being to reduce the time to go, and Giurgiu will become more interesting for investors. It is not included in this “lot 2” the Vidra – Comana portion that was modernized in the past years, when the new bridge from Grădiștea was built.

The total duration of the contract is 158 months, of which 6 months are allocated to the design activity, 30 months the execution of the works, 120 months guarantee and activities after the final reception 2 months.

The investment objective is called “Modernization of the railway infrastructure between the CF Bucharest – Jilava – Giurgiu Nord – Giurgiu Nord – Lot 2” stations.

Scoated effects of this modernization

  • improving the mobility and accessibility for the inhabitants and the business environment in Ilfov and Giurgiu counties;
  • increasing the attractiveness of Giurgiu municipality and strengthening its connections with European transport networks;
  • stimulation of investments in areas with economic potential, such as Giurgiu Nord Industrial and Technological Park, Danubius cross-border business center and trimodal hub “High Performance Green Port”;
  • Increasing the average speed of trains and significant reduction of travel time;
  • increasing the safety of traffic and improving the comfort of travelers;
  • reducing polluting emissions and negative impact on the environment;
  • Destining railway traffic in the capital area and adjacent localities.
