Why is it important?
The Kolsoouk Akbari case is one of the most shocking processes in Iran in recent years. The woman is accused of methodical planning and realization of killings that were aimed at obtaining property benefits. The trial attracted the attention of the public, and the families of the victims demand justice, including the death penalty.
How was crimes discovered?
It all began with the suspicious death of Azizollah Babaei, one of Akbari's husbands. His family, concerned about sudden death, demanded an autopsy. Although at first there was no evidence, the breakthrough occurred when another family told an almost identical story. It turned out that the father of one of their friends also married Akbari, who tried to poison him.
How did the accused act?
According to investigators, Akbari used a mix of diabetes, potency and industrial alcohol drugs to weaken her husbands. In one case, she was to strangle the victim with a damp towel, in another she continued to serve drugs, which led to death. After each death, she demanded a decline or dowry.
What did the accused lawyer say?
Akbari's defender argued that her mental state should be examined. However, one of the relatives of the victims rejected these claims, saying: – No mentally ill person would be able to develop such a methodical plan and manipulate so many families.
What next?
The Akbari trial attracted the attention of as many as 45 reasons, mainly members of the victims' family. Four families have already formally demanded the death penalty, and the others are to present their conclusions at the next hearing. The judges will start meeting in order to issue a verdict, which can end one of the most shocking criminal matters in Iran.
