US President Donald Trump intends to meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, next week, The New York Times (NYT) reports, citing two people familiar with the plan, according to Reuters.
Trump then intends to meet with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski, writes the American publication, adding that the plans were revealed in a telephone call with European leaders on Wednesday.
“The Russians have expressed their desire to meet President Trump, and the president is open at a meeting with both President Putin and President Zelenski. President Trump wants this brutal war to end,” said Karoline Leavitt, the spokesman of the Alba house.
It was not clear where and when these meetings will take place, notes Reuters.
Previously on Wednesday, Trump acknowledged that he spoke to European leaders after the “extremely productive” meeting of American emissary Steve Witkoff in Russia.
Trump, who promised to end the Russia's war in Ukraine “on the first day” of his presidential term, wore several telephone calls with Putin and met with Zelenski after returning to the White House in January.
However, in recent weeks, he has become more and more frustrated by Moscow due to lack of progress in the end of the conflict that lasts for three years. As a result of his frustration, Trump has recently set a term for several days for Russia to accept a peace agreement in the Ukraine war, threatening otherwise with imposing new sanctions.
