The president of the Jewish World Congress, Ronald S. Lauder, warned on Thursday that the delay of the Vexler law risks encouraging the denial of the Holocaust and the rehabilitation of war criminals.

The decision of President Nicușor Dan to resubmit the law that provides for the fight against extremism and anti -Semistry, initiated by the deputy Silviu Vexler, was harshly criticized by the president of the Jewish World Congress, who states that the delay of promulgation risks having serious consequences on the internal and international.

“I am deeply worried about the decision of President Dan to delay the adoption of a legislation that would significantly strengthen Romania's ability to combat anti-Semitism and distort the Holocaust history. It is a twice constitutional law and elaborated in cooperation with the country's democratic institutions,” Lauder said.

According to him, the request for review sent by the Romanian President to the Parliament in Bucharest is perceived, both internally and externally, as a step back, which risks “legitimizing the efforts to rehabilitate war criminals” and “encourage those who deny or distort the Holocaust.

“It is a major risk of compromising decades of progress that Romania has made both in confrontation with its past and in honoring the memory of victims,” the leader of the Jewish World Congress said.

Lauder urged the head of the Romanian state to “understand the wider implications” of this postponement and to support the rapid adoption of the law.

The law, initiated by Silviu Vexler, the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Romania, which provides for the fight against anti -Semitism, xenophobia and the prohibition of legionary organizations was adopted by the Parliament, then attacks twice at the Constitutional Court (CCR). Once by the opposition parties, then by President Nicușor Dan. Both notifications were rejected. The leader's approach from the Cotroceni Palace has aroused criticisms.

Dan announced that he expected to see the motivation of the RCC then to resubmit it to re-examine in the legislative forum, specifying that he will ask the parliamentarians to modify the articles of law they consider unconstitutional, although the constitutional judges contradicted him and rejected his appeal.

“I still think that leaving ambiguity in several articles in this law is harmful to society and makes the tension between the two groups, which I have seen in a year for a year, to amplify and not reduce and, after the Constitutional Court will draft the motivation by which it rejected my objection to the unconstitutionality, I will send it to the Parliament.

The World Jewish Congress (WJC), based in New York, is the international organization that represents Jewish communities in 100 countries before international governments, parliaments and organizations.
