Cristian Pepino, director, writer and screenwriter, passed away at the age of 75, the Teatrul de Animație Tăndărică announced on Sunday evening, where those who wish to pay their last respects will be able to do so on Thursday, February 26, between 1pm and 10pm.

The representatives of the theater described Cristian Pepino as a “marking personality and essential landmark of the animation theater in Romania”.

“For Șăndărică and for the entire field of animation theater, Cristian Pepino was an artistic landmark, a living spirit, attentive to detail, demanding and passionate, who knew how to take animation theater beyond convention and give it consistency, strength and dignity. He believed in this art without reservations and defended it firmly,” reads the statement posted on the institution's Facebook page.

“His departure leaves a painful void in the theater community”

Teatrul Șăndărică said that Pepino “built performances that remained in the public's memory, shaped generations of artists and contributed decisively to the consolidation of a mature and deep stage language.”

“For Teatrul Șăndărică, Cristian Pepino was part of the artistic identity of the institution, a mentor and a conscience that constantly defended the value and dignity of this art. His departure leaves a painful void in the theater community. However, the performances, ideas, disciples and the imprint of a life dedicated to the stage remain. We are with his family, friends and all those who knew and cherished him. The name of Cristian Pepino remains registered in the history of animation theater in Romania.

Actor Ștefan Craiu also sent a message.

“If you say puppet theater, you say Cristian Pepino. Director, teacher, friend, parent for many generations, lover of art, with a good soul and a lot of humor. That's how I met him, surrounded by people and disinterested in everything that is petty in our profession,” said the actor in a post on Facebook, according to Agerpres.

Cristian Pepino, who was both a scenographer and a graphic designer, “gave everything for his students”, said Ștefan Craiu.

“Remember when a student confessed that he had never seen the sea, then you got your hands on the phone and called Alifantis to go to the sea that night with all of us, luckily Alifantis had a concert in another city and I stayed at the “library”. This was Mr. Professor, he gave everything for his students. Have a smooth journey, Mr. Professor, I'm glad to have met you”, he also declared.
