Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carry has been disappointed after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order by which Canadian goods were increased from 25% to 35%, for products that do not fall under the US-Mexico-Canade, reports Reuters.
The measure, which Washington partially linked to what he called Canada's failure to stop smuggling with Fentanil, is the latest attack in a commercial war taken by Trump for months, started shortly after taking over.
He announced new customs duties for Mexico and Canada, US neighbors, in February two months before the so-called “release of America”, in which he announced the import rates decided by his administration for the rest of the US trade partners around the world.
Prime Minister Mark Cariy said in a statement published on his “X” page, that the customs taxes imposed by the US will seriously affect the wood, steel, aluminum and cars industry.
However, he promised measures to protect the jobs in Canada, to encourage the purchase of Canadian products, investments in industrial competitiveness and diversification of export markets.
Canada replied to Trump with Retortion Customs Tax
“Although we will continue to negotiate with the United States on our commercial relationship, the Canadian government is focused on what we can control: the building of a powerful canade,” Cary said.
In order to justify its decision, the Trump administration invoked the cross-border flow of fentanel, although only 1% of the amount of this opioid analgesic that caused a drug crisis in the country in Canada.
Cariy gave assurances that his government would make intense efforts to reduce the quantity even more.
Canada and China were the only major countries around the world that responded to Trump's moves with imposing new customs taxes for imports of American goods, but Beijing later came with an agreement with the Washington Administration and negotiations for its continuous completion.
