“Fidel to his historical commitment for a fair and sustainable peace in the Near East, I decided to recognize the state of Palestine. I will make this solemn announcement in the General Assembly of the United Nations,” Macron wrote on the X platform, in a letter to the leader of the Palestinian authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

According to Reuters, France would become the first great Western power that officially recognizes Palestine, and could encourage other states to follow the example, in a collective effort to relaunch the peace process in the Middle East.

In his message, the French president emphasized the urgency of cessation of the war in Gaza, the need to release the hostages and the humanitarian support of the civilian population.

At the same time, he pointed out the importance of demilitarization of Hamas, the security of the gas and the construction of a viable Palestinian state, which will officially recognize Israel and contribute to the stability of the region.

“There is no alternative. The French will peace in the Middle East. We are up to the French, together with the Israelis, Palestinians, our European and international partners, to prove that this is possible”, Macron said.
