A former director of a state-owned company was preventively arrested after being misplaced 900,000 euros, money he would have lost to online betting. The woman, the mother of two children, blames the addiction to gambling.

A former director of the economic compartment from a state -owned company came after the bars, being accused of stealing over 900,000 euros from the money he managed, money he played and lost to online sports betting. Before the court, the 39 -year -old woman, the mother of two children, admitted the facts in full, invoking the severe addiction to the gambling as a reason for her gestures, according to ProTV.
The Bucharest Court issued a preventive arrest warrant for 30 days on its behalf, after the prosecutors of the Capital Prosecutor's Office accused her of misappropriation with particularly serious consequences, illegal access to a computer and false system in documents under private signature.
Injury over 900,000 euros
Investigators claim that, in just three and a half months, the director would have made 18 transfers to a company owned by her husband, taking advantage of the unlimited access to the state company funds. The damage calculated by the investigators exceeds 900,000 euros, and the fraud would have been discovered following an internal control, when the woman resigned.
The woman's husband would find out about the situation only when the police opened the investigation, too late to stop the online betting line.
“Suffer from a strong addiction”
The former director was accused of misappropriation with particularly serious consequences, illegal access to a computer and false system in documents under private signature.
According to her defender, Romeo Cosma, the woman would have used almost all the money to bet online on basketball matches, and the addiction would have completely out of control.
“My client assumes full responsibility for the crime committed. He suffers from a strong gambling, for sports betting. the lawyer said.
The former director challenged the measure of preventive arrest, hoping to convince the court to leave her home, near her children. Until the appeal resolved, the prosecutors seized his share of the family apartment, to recover some of the damage.
If found guilty, the woman risks a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
Gambling
Specialists draw attention to the risks involved in gambling addiction, a problem that can quickly lead to financial ruin and deterioration of mental health.
Psychologist Mihai Copăceanu, specialist in addictions, explains that some people may lose, in a few minutes, amounts of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of euros, without being able to control the impulse to play.
“Such people need money management strategies, surveillance from other people and constant support for months, maybe even years, until the impulse becomes controllable”, explained the psychologist.
In Romania, people dependent on gambling can be self-exposed from bets and casinos by a request submitted to the National Gambling Office, but this measure works only in the case of platforms authorized on the country.
