Imagine: the Mexican leader loses his leg in the war, and then arranges her farewell to such a pomp that many politicians would envy him, shares IA EAOMEDIA. In 1842, Antonio Lopez de Santa – Anna – the one that called himself the “Napoleon of the West” decided that the amputated limb was simply not enough grave. And he raised the whole country to the ears: parade, poets, speakers, guns, monument – all for the sake of one leg.
The story began back in 1838, when Santa – Anna was seriously injured during the so -called confectionery war with France. Then the cannon nucleus fell into it, and my leg had to be amputated. At first, he buried her in the backyard with military honors. And after a couple of years he decided that it was time to arrange a repeated funeral – this time loud and in public.
He dug up the remains, solemnly shifted them into a glass urn and drove along Mexico City. The people were in shock, the musicians play, the guns thunder, they carry the coffin like a shrine. All this turns into a grand performance, but the main thing – it worked: Santa – Anna again becomes president.
True, delight quickly disappeared. The politician turned out to be a good showman, but not a manager. He was accused of greed, failures in wars and loss of territories. In 1844, the angry crowd dug his “heroic” leg, carried it along the streets and threw it away. And in 1847, when the Americans occupied Mexico, they brought with them his wooden prosthesis-now it is exhibited at the Museum in Illinois. And there are still disputes: to return or not?
