Russian cyber attacks for critical infrastructure. What do we know?


The latest incident, which is described by “Fakt”, took place on May 7 in Szczytno, where Cybercriminals took control of the parameters of the water treatment plant. On the same day, a water supply network was noted in the city on Ogrodowa Street. As he notes, cited by “Fakt” CyberDefence24.pl, it is not clear whether both events are related to each other, despite the convergence of dates.
The next attacks recorded by “Fakt” took place on May 9, when the hackers attacked the bioreactor in Nowe Miasto Lubawskie and the hydroelectric power plant in Gdańsk. Earlier, the goal of cyber criminals fell in Tolkmicko, Małdytach and Sieraków, as well as sewage treatment plants in Wydminy and Kuźnica.

Hacker operation
According to the Microsoft report, which is referred to by “Fakt”, the Russian Hacker Sandworm group conducted an operation called Badpilot, which covered over fifteen countries. Attacks affected not only Europe and North America, but also such distant countries as Angola, Argentina, Australia, China, Egypt, India and Pakistan.
From the beginning of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, NATO states have become the main goal of Russian cyber attacks. The report, which cites “Fakt”, shows that thirty -six percent of all enemy actions carried out by the Russians were aimed at the members of the alliance. In May, Russian hackers also conducted attacks on police networks and NATO infrastructure in the Netherlands.
A particularly dramatic increase in the number of cyber attacks was recorded in Ukraine. In 2024, the number of incidents aimed at critical infrastructure increased by almost seventy percent, reaching four thousand three hundred and fifteen cases – writes “Fakt”.
Experts emphasize that the actions of Russian hackers pose a serious threat to the security of NATO countries and their partners. They indicate that attacks on critical infrastructure may have far -reaching consequences for the functioning of entire societies.
