Recommendations of specialists during heat

Specialists from the National Institute of Public Health (IMP) have recently made several recommendations to the population for hot periods.

  • “Avoid, as far as possible, prolonged and direct exposure to the sun between 11:00 and 18:00 and use protective creams on the areas of the solar rays.
  • Avoid outdoor activities that require high energy consumption (sport, gardening, construction, etc.) during periods with very high temperatures, you can possibly move them during the day periods when the temperatures are lower.
  • Stay in the shade. Spend 2-3 hours during the day in a cool place.
  • Reduce body temperature by performing showers or bathing with refreshing water. Water the skin using a wet towel, spray or lightweight wet clothing. Drink water regularly, without waiting for thirst, to hydrate you properly (1 cup of water per hour and at least 2-3 liters per day) ”

They advise the population to keep the windows closed during the period when the outside temperature is higher than that of the house and cover with blinds or shutters to block the direct sunlight

  • “Use the air during the night to cool your house, opening the windows after dark, when the outside temperature is lower than the inner temperature.
  • Stop as many of the home appliances in your home if you don't need them.
  • Use electric fans only when temperatures are below 40 degrees C. At temperatures above 40 degrees C, fans will heat the body.
  • If you use air conditioning, set the thermostat to 27 degrees C and start an electric fan – this will make the room feel colder with 4 degrees C ”.

They also recommend the use of lightweight, light and wide clothing, natural fibers, as possible of light colors, wearing sun hats and sunscreen when traveling.
