The Ukrainian authorities announced the construction of a bridge over the Danube between the town of Orlîvka (Cartal), in Ismail district, and the city of Isaccea, from Tulcea county. The project is part of a large southern transport corridor, meant to connect Ukraine with the European Union, through Romania. The initiative is included in the Reconstruction and Development Strategy of the Odessa region for the period 2025–2027.

Part of the international route E87

The future bridge will be integrated into the international route E87, which connects Ukraine to Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. Currently, Ukrainian drivers wishing to reach Romania are forced to bypass through the Republic of Moldova, crossing the border twice.

According to Ukrainska Pravda, the new bridge will reduce the distance to Isaccea by about 80 kilometers.

Financing of 27 million euros

The construction will be supported by an international aid of 27 million euros, granted in three annual installments, starting this year.

The following stages of the project include the design of the bridge, the realization of the environmental studies, the construction itself, the arrangement of the access roads and the crossing points, as well as the connection of the future bridge to the international road network.

According to the announced plans, the bridge will have four lanes, pedestrian sidewalks on both sides and will be built so as to withstand earthquakes up to Magnitude 9. From Ukraine, a 3 -kilometer access path will be built, and from Romania, one of 950 meters.

In the autumn of 2023, the Russian army attacked the crossing point with the “Orlîvka” ferry, even on the border with Romania, in the Odessa region. This incident emphasizes the need for safer and more stable road infrastructure for cross -border transport.
