The feast of pre -Christian origins
In the Christian tradition, Pentecost represents the feast of the descent of the Holy Spirit (the descent of the Holy Spirit), being celebrated on the fifth day after the Easter feast, on a Sunday. This reminds of the descent of the Holy Spirit over the disciples of Jesus of Nazareth and on the Holy Virgin Mary, the Mother of the Lord, gathered in Cenacol.
The Romanian word “Pentecost” derives from the Latin Rosalia (Rozalia), which in turn comes from the Greek term Rousália and is also found in the Slavonic, Rusalija.
In the Old Testament, the Pentecost was mentioned as an agricultural holiday of the Jews, in which they offered offers from the fruits of the earth. Over this holiday, the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit was overlapping.
The name and customs of the Pentecost were also borrowed by the ancient Romanians. With the Christianity of the Roman Empire, the feast has gained Christian significance, overlapping the pagan meanings and habits, which have been lost in time.
Pentecost, deities of forests
In the Romanian mythology, the Pentecost, also called, are female mythical beings that appear at night, before the song of the roosters, during the period between Easter and Pentecost. They are considered the rebel spirits of the dead who, after leaving the graves to the hawks and spent the Easter with the living, refuse to return to their sub -earthly places. Like Sânzienele, the other spirits celebrated during the summer, Pentecosts appear in Cete, testing people.
“Their home would be through the unpaved and untouched cods of the ax or the foot of man, through the sky, on the plains, on the deserted waters. I beat drums and trumpets, play (hour, belt, etc.), spread meals on green grass, drink, spend “writes the ethnologist Ion Ghinoiu.
They can be associated with the fairy of the forest, also called the “beautiful ones” in the area of Hunedoara, which adorn the mountains with flowers and take care that nature will remain undisturbed by people. They have old origins and were identified by ethnologists with deities from the mythology of Thracian and Greco-Roman, such as Bendis, Artemis or Diana.
“In the beliefs of the locals, those beautiful ones walk through trees with large leaves, through apples, oaks, we were strange our beautiful, they did not lose their selenious meanings of the old artemis, the one identified with the Moon, when they punished those who approached them through the charo who called during the night. The departure is forgotten ”the ethnologist reported Lucia Apolzan, who intensely researched the settlements in the Dacian fortress of Hunedoara.
According to the popular mythology, if someone sees or hears the Pentecost, he must neither move nor speak.
“Where he plays, the land remains burnt and beaten, the grass blackens or ceases to grow. Pentecost punish the people who do not respect the days, those who sleep at night or who go out at night after the water, lifting them up in the whirlwind or,” shows the author of the Romanian mythology Dictionary.
To these are opposed, in the Romanian mythology, the nun – the strangers of the Călușului, an ancient god of the horse, protector of spring, summer and fertility. His tradition gave birth to the dance of the guards, a popular habit found in several regions of Romania, which reproduces old magical rituals meant to bring fertility, plenty and to drive away the diseases (Pentecost).
