The guidelines were issued in 2022, just a few weeks after the Supreme Court undermined the nationwide right to abortion in America.

The Associated Press agency reminds that Joe Biden's administration has taken action to maintain access to abortion in extreme cases to prevent the loss of organs, serious hemorrhages and other serious complications in women.

It was argued at the time that hospitals – including those located in the States, where there is almost a total ban on abortion – they must carry out such procedures under the Act on emergency treatment and active childbirth (Emtala). This law requires that the emergency room financed from the Medicare program (insurance system for the poor) ensure research and stabilization to all patients.

Trump's administration announced a departure from the enforcement of this policy. The move raised concerns among some doctors and defenders of the rights to abortion that women would not have access to life -saving treatments in the States with restrictive bans.
