The mission of the European Parliament, monitoring compliance with the rule of law in Slovakia, MEP Sophie Wilmes stated on Tuesday that in her opinion Bratislava follows the path of Budapest. She added that she was planning to transfer the European Commission to summarize the mission reservations.

PE deputies spent two days in Slovakia and had 15 meetings with representatives of authorities, non -governmental organizations and the media. They pointed out, among others that government politicians use a vulgar language not only against the opposition and the media, but also to the judiciary. The Belgian MEP considered this unacceptable.
Wilmes criticized the frequent acceptance by the parliament in accelerated mode, without discussion. She drew attention to the recently adopted law, imposing the obligation to disclose donors' data on non -governmental organizations (NGO).
She stated that democracy, the rule of law and basic rights are the foundation.
MEPs also talked about the planned change of the Slovak constitution, which in some issues is to establish the superiority of domestic law over the EU. Wilmes admitted that the project has not yet been accepted, but as she said – a “huge question mark” in the light of an EU agreement.
