Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced on Monday that he will soon ask for the vote of confidence in Parliament for his coalition government after the victory of nationalist candidate Karol Nawrocki in the presidential elections on Sunday, reports AFP and Reuters, quoted by Agerpres.

“The first test (for the Government-no) will be a vote of confidence that I will soon ask for the lower House”, the pro-European Donald Tusk said in a televised speech.

He promised to continue the country's government, expressing his hope at the same time that he could cooperate with the new elected president Karol Nawrocki.

The nationalist candidate Karol Nawrocki won the Polish presidential election against the Liberal Mayor of Warsaw, Vafal Trzaskowski, who benefited from the support of the Liberal Government and Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

“I want to declare you to everyone today that I will not stop at any time, as a prime minister, in my work and in our common struggle for Poland of our dreams (…): free, sovereign, safe and prosperous,” said Tusk.

“The presidential elections have not changed anything about it and they will change nothing,” he assured.

In principle, the governmental coalition has a majority in the Parliament, which allows it to obtain the confidence of the House.

Shortly before Tusk's short discourse, PIS leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said that the result of the presidential elections was “a red card” for the government and demanded the creation of an “apolitical and technical government” consisting of experts.

Voices from Pis, the party that supported Nawrocki, have already demanded the dissolution of the evening in order to organize anticipated elections. Pis is the party with the most mandates in the Warsaw Legislature, but Donald Tusk returned to power after the elections organized by Poland in 2023 as PIS did not have enough allies to create a parliamentary majority.

Scenarios for the after -election period

The scenario with Karol Nawrocki in the Presidential Palace could mean that for coalition will remain only the administration of current affairs until the following parliamentary elections, scheduled for the autumn of 2027. It would mean two and a half years of political stagnation to which this government block led by Tusk may not survive.

“We can forget about the reforms in justice, the changes in the prosecutor's office, the key promises we made before the 2023 elections. We will not have ambassador appointments. Every change in a key function in the army will have to be approved by Nawrocki.

From the perspective of the ruling coalition, this would be one of the less evil scenarios. The government camp risks breaking down. Among those in government, the belief reigns that Karol Nawrocki in the Presidential Palace will not be a second Andrzej Duda, but a Andrzej Duda “La Cub”. No important project of the ruling coalition would receive its support.
