Sorin Grindeanu says that the PSD “assumes its share of responsibility” for Romania's entry into recession, but there is definitely a main culprit for the wrong direction we were pushed in. He reproaches Prime Minister Bolojan for being “stubborn and obsessed” with his own image.

In a post published on Facebook on Friday, Sorin Grindeanu said that “after months of austerity, sacrifices, abnormal taxes and increased prices, Statistica has officially confirmed what millions of Romanians already feel in their pockets: we are not going in the right direction with an economy that has entered a technical recession”.

He says that the reality is painful and a shame for the entire coalition, but that the PSD takes “part of the responsibility”

“We have not always been able to find the right means to stop all these economic and social amputations that have hit every Romanian and every Romanian company”, adds the head of the PSD.

“Hazardous decisions that turned into experiments”

Grindeanu conveys that the social democrats fought “with the bayonet” in the Government with “some accountants of social suffering to at least partially stop the obtuse cuts”.

The president of the PSD says that they managed to stop measures such as the VAT increase to 24%, the removal of ceilings for basic products, or investments would have been stopped.

“However, I regret that we have not been able to stop many of the risky decisions that have turned into experiments done on people's backs,” he adds.

“Certainly, there is a main culprit for the wrong direction in which we have been pushed. Stubbornness led to absurdity, fierce resistance to any rational argument, permanent obsession with image and personal calculations instead of real dialogue and solid economic solutions. This is the true balance after six months of mandate,” Grindeanu says, referring to Prime Minister Bolojan.

Finally, he sends a direct message to Ilie Bolojan that the government will end if the measures are not suitable. “Understand, Mr. Prime Minister, that if a government is not for the people, then it will not exist at all!”.

INS: Romania entered a technical recession

The Romanian economy registered a contraction in the last quarter of 2025 (by 1.9% compared to the previous quarter), after the economy had also decreased in autumn compared to the summer of last year. Technically, we are in recession, although for the whole year Romania had an increase of 0.6%, according to the announcement made by Statistics on Friday.

A technical recession is a decline in real Gross Domestic Product for two consecutive quarters and indicates a slowdown in economic activity.

The information comes after, on Monday, Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan declared that he does not know “if there will be a recession or not, but there is no country where corrective measures have been taken without the effects of economic contraction.

“We should recover by the end of the year. We can only consume what we can afford. Obviously, demand is falling. We tried to reduce investments to a high level and that's what we want to do this year as well. This is the year we have to absorb the European funds from PNRR”, said Ilie Bolojan.
