Merz also said that Ukraine could now defend itself, for example by attacking military goals in Russia. Some time ago she couldn't do it. “He can do it now” – emphasized the Chancellor during the “WDR EuropaForum 2025” conference, quoted by the DPA agency. He did not provide any further details.

Russia mercilessly attacks civilian goals and bombed the cities, said Merz. Ukraine does not do it and should remain so. “But a country that can oppose the attacker only on its own territory, does not defend itself properly,” said the German chancellor.

As DPA reminded, in November the first reports appeared that Ukraine fired American long -range shells of Atacms and British STORM Shadow maneuvering missiles for military purposes in Russia.

At the beginning of the Russian war against Ukraine, the West did not provide Ukraine, a long range weapons to prevent the escalation of the conflict. Since then, however, Great Britain and France have provided Kiev maneuvering missiles with Storm Shadow/SCALP. In Germany, the supply of Taurus maneuvering missiles with a range of 500 kilometers is discussed. Moscow warned Berlin against providing such a weapon to Kiev – it was recalled in the text.

Kremlin: Western decision about weapons for Kiev is dangerous

The decision of Western countries to remove restrictions on the range of weapons provided to Ukraine “is contrary to attempts to regulate the” conflict and is “dangerous” – said on Monday the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Pieskov.

“If such decisions actually took place, they are potentially contrary to our aspirations to achieve political regulation,” said Pieskow, quoted by the independent Russian portal Meduza. He assessed that these are “quite dangerous decisions”.
