An earthquake with magnitude 6.1 occurred on Thursday morning off the coast of Crete, in Greece. The earthquake was also felt in Turkey and Israel, Reuters reports.

The earthquake occurred 79 km from the city of Heraklion, at 6:19 local time (the same as that of Romania).

All the Greek firefighters were on maximum alert throughout the chalk after the earthquake off the island. Firefighters said they had not received any request for assistance so far and no serious material damage has been reported.

It is the second strong earthquake produced in Greece in the last month. On May 14, another powerful earthquake, with magnitude 5.9 hit Greece, the epicenter being located about one hundred kilometers from the coasts of Crete and Santorini.

Greece is one of the most predisposed countries in Europe in earthquakes, and an unprecedented level of seismic activity has shaken the popular tourist island Santorini for several weeks earlier this year, causing thousands of people to evacuate, and authorities to close schools.
