The weather was much colder than usual in the early hours of 2026 and there were no positive temperatures anywhere in the country. The coldest was at Vârful Omu, -23 degrees Celsius, but the morning was also cold in Bucharest. Meteorologists have announced that the weather is deteriorating in much of the country and several weather alerts have been issued.

ANM data shows that at midnight it was -23 C in Omu and -19 C in the Călimani mountains, and the warmest was in Constanța, -1 C.

The weather got colder in the morning, and at the Bucharest Băneasa weather station the night's minimum was -11.4 C, while in Brașov it was -14.6 C. It was colder in Bâlea Lac, -19.5 degrees Celsius, while the highest minimum in the country was -3.1 C, in Constanța.

It was also very cold in Târgoviște, a minimum of -12.5 C, but also in the west of the country (-12.3 C in Văradia de Mureș).

Where is the thickest snow?

The ANM map shows that it is 124 cm at Omu, 60 cm at Bâlea Lac and 27 cm at the weather station in the Călimani mountains. There is a layer of snow also at low altitudes: 6 cm in Caransebeș, 3 cm in Oradea, 4 cm in Reșita.

Huge differences between the warmest and coldest January 1st

The coldest January 1st in recent decades was in 2015, when the lowest temperatures were -31.4 C in Intorsura Buzăului, -28.9 C in Miercurea Ciuc and -26.6 C in Brașov. In Bucharest it was -19.7 C, and the least cold was in Crisana (-4 C in the morning).

The warmest day on January 1 was in 2023, with maximum temperatures above 20 C: +20.6 C in Curtea de Argeș, +20.2 C in Rădăuți, +20.1 C in Târgu Ocna and +20 C in Botoșani.

At midnight on January 1, 2023, just as the year began, it was extremely hot everywhere in the country, nowhere were temperatures below -1 degree, and in Râmnicu Sărat, Piatra Neamț and Târgu Neamț it was +12 C, while in Blaj and Sebeș it was +11 C.
