The EU lifted economic sanctions from Syria


Context

The military conflict in Syria has lasted since 2011. At different times, government troops, opposition forces, radical Islamists, Kurds, militants of the Islamic state, as well as the armed forces of the country of aggressor of the Russian Federation, the USA, Iran and Turkey participated in the fighting at different times.

On January 27, Kallas stated that the EU foreign ministers agreed on the road map of the weakening of European sanctions against Syria, emphasizing that Europe can cancel the weakening of sanctions if Damascus will take “wrong steps”.

On February 7, Bloomberg, with reference to familiar sources, wrote that the EU discusses a partial suspension of certain sanctions regarding the energy industry of Syria, including the abolition of the prohibition on the import of raw oil and the export of technology for the oil and gas sphere.

On February 24, the EU suspended restrictive measures for the main sectors of the Syrian economy, the European Union Council informs. The Foreign Ministry of Ukraine on February 25 stated that after more than the “decade of suffering” related to the board of the Assad regime, the Syrians “deserve the restoration of normal life.”
