Former presidential candidate Călin Georgescu remains under judicial control for another 60 days, in the case where he is being tried for his statements in which he promoted fascist, legionary, racist or xenophobic ideas, concepts or doctrines.

The decision was taken on Thursday by the Bucharest Court, which rejected Georgescu's appeal against another decision by which the measure of judicial control was maintained, informs Agerpres. The decision of the Bucharest Court is final.

The former candidate was awaited by several hundred people in front of the court, and at one point, after he left the venue, there was a stampede between a violent group of supporters and gendarmes.

The law enforcement took a man out of the crowd and put him in a van, in defense of the individual jumping several people, including a pregnant woman, but also another man, the latter engaging with the gendarmes.

Later, several images appeared in the public space accompanied by messages such as “The police have started beating women”, which law enforcement officials say are false.

“From the very beginning, we make it clear that, at no time, the gendarmes assaulted the pregnant woman. Their intervention was aimed at protecting her, trying to keep her away from the agitated area, to avoid escalation. They also recommended her to stay in a safe area, away from the violent group, to avoid any risk. We note that, during the public meeting organized near the Bucharest Court, the gendarmes they acted to extract a man who showed recalcitrant behavior, did not follow the instructions of the law enforcement throughout the duration of the public meeting and, finally, refused to provide his identification data at the request of the gendarmes”, the Gendarmerie said.

“Although the dialogue teams intervened to de-escalate the situation, some of the participants continued to show aggressive attitudes, and another man engaged the gendarmes, in an attempt to prevent them from applying the specific measures against the first person. As a result of these actions, the intervention of the law enforcement forces was imposed and she was taken to the police station and the second person”, mentioned the representatives of the Gendarmerie.

The former presidential candidate has been under judicial review since February. He repeatedly asked for the preventive measure to be lifted, but without success.

Călin Georgescu is being sent to court in two cases, being accused, among other things, of legionary propaganda and actions against the constitutional order.

In the second case, Georgescu is tried alongside Horațiu Potra and two other people. The former leader of the mercenaries, currently in Dubai, announced today, through lawyers, that he requested to be brought to Romania, where he is subject to an arrest warrant in absentia, to participate in the trial.
