The Japanese concern intends to spend $ 11 billion on the modernization of the US Steel infrastructure by 2028. As Reuters calculated, quoting the document and two sources familiar with the case, $ 1 billion as part of this amount will be initially invested in the construction of Nowa Huta. However, this amount may increase by another 3 billion – it was pointed out.

These details about the new investment were not previously known in public. Nippon Steel's original investment offer amounted to $ 1.4 billion.

Reuters emphasized that a significantly expanded financial proposal of the Japanese side is perceived as the last attempt to obtain permission to the fusion, which was opposed by both US president Joe Biden and the current one – Donald Trump.

The final date of the end of the revision of the proposed connection, which was blocked by Biden in January for reasons of national security, expires on May 21. Trump will then have 15 days to decide on the fate of the transaction, although this term may be postponed.

The agency pointed out that it is not clear whether the new investment amount “is enough to convince Trump. However, the new offer shows the determination of Nippon Steel to access the US absorbent market. In the case of the failure of the agreement, the Japanese concern is threatened with a contractual penalty of $ 565 million, and an additional burden for him is a 25 % duties for the import of steel from abroad, introduced by Trump.

The Reuters agency said that the US Steel refused to comment on this matter. Nippon Steel, a White House and the Treasury Department, which is supervised by a committee dealing with transaction analysis in terms of national security, have not yet responded to requests for a statement. (PAP)
