Sorrowful Mother of God, Svetets

On this day, Orthodox Christians celebrate the feast of the miraculous icon of the Mother of God, which is called “Joy of All Who Sorrow.”

It depicts the Virgin Mary surrounded by people overwhelmed by illnesses and sorrows, as well as angels performing good deeds.

The icon first became famous as miraculous in 1688, when it was in the Church of the Transfiguration in Moscow. By the way, by that time the image was already so dilapidated that it had to be strengthened with branches of a cypress tree. The miracle that the icon revealed was the healing of the sister of the Patriarch of Moscow Job. According to legend, while calling on the Mother of God for deliverance from her illness, Euphemia heard a voice telling her to pray to the image of “Joy to All Who Sorrow.” After a prayer service over the icon, the woman was cured. Since that time, according to legend, the image has shown many more miraculous healings.

In Rus', winter girls' gatherings began from this day. As a rule, girls did needlework and at the same time sang or talked. All this happened in the light of a torch, which is why the day itself was often called Light. “Russian society is the delight of girls,” people said.

It was also customary to pray on this day to the icon of the Sorrowful Mother of God, asking her to save her from sorrow and illness.
