39 years have passed since the Chernobyl disaster; Today, Ukraine pays tribute to the heroes, reminding that Russian aggression and attacks on nuclear objects are still threatening the world, and the struggle for security is ongoing – said on Saturday the head of the State Service for Extraordinary Situations (DSNS) of Ukraine Andrij Danyk.

“Today, 39 years have passed since the Chernobyl disaster. On April 26, 1986, he left a trail in the heart of every Ukrainian forever. Today we worship those who were the first to throw themselves into fire and radiation. Those who saved the world” – wrote Danyk in a telegram.

The head of DSNS pointed out that even after decades of the Chernobyl disaster, the danger did not disappear. “The Russian troops completely ignore the tragic experiences of past years and are trying to attack the exclusion zone (in Chernobyl) and take over the objects of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. For three years in captivity there has been a Zaporian Atomic Power Plant, and the world has been living in anticipation of the worst” – he said.

Danyk emphasized that Russian fire, explosions and fires remind you that the threat did not disappear. “We will survive. Because we have the truth behind us. And the memory of those who have proved at the price of life that the heroes exist. Our fight is going on. And our memory lives. Eternal honor for the dead. Glory and gratitude to the living” – he emphasized.

At the beginning of the full -size war against Ukraine, the Russian troops entered the Chernobyl power plant and began its occupation. It lasted from February 24 to March 31, 2022. On February 13, 2025, the Russian drone hit the Sarcophagus of the Chernobyl power plant, seriously damaging its coating.

On April 26, 1986, in the Chernobyl nuclear power plant near Kiev, as a result of a failure when the reactor's core overheating, a hydrogen, fire and radioactive substances were spreading. It was the largest disaster in the history of nuclear energy and one of the largest industrial disasters of the 20th century.

31 people were killed directly as a result of the Chernobyl disaster and during the rescue operation. According to some studies, due to a failure, about 600,000 People around the world have been exposed to an increased dose of radiation, equivalent to two x -ray photos. The number of deaths due to cancer that developed in strongly irradiated people was estimated at around 4,000.
