US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he was expecting serious trade negotiations between the United States and China this weekend. He also did not rule out a conversation with the Chinese leader XI Jinping.

“I think we will have a good weekend with China. I think they have a lot to gain. I think they have much more to gain than we, in a sense,” said Trump.
He also noted that duties on Chinese goods cannot exceed 145 percent, so now they can only fall.
Trump emphasized that China has a “huge commercial surplus” with the United States, which is unacceptable. “I would like China to open,” he said.
US Treasury Minister Scott Bessent and the main negotiator for trade in Jamieson Greer will meet on Saturday in Switzerland with the Chinese deputy prime minister for economic policy HE LIFENG. These will be the first talks of Washington and Beijing from the beginning of the trade war between the two powers.
Trump asked if he would talk to the Chinese president XI Jinping after a Saturday meeting in Switzerland, he replied that it was possible. “I can, probably,” said the American president.
Talks in Switzerland on Tuesday were announced by Bessent, who on this occasion noted that both sides have a common interest in lowering customs, because their current level – 145 percent. for goods from China and 125 percent for goods from the USA – is synonymous with the embargo. (PAP)
