California has become the fourth largest economy in the world – said the governor of this American state Gavin Newsom, quoted on Friday by the BBC station. In 2024, the California GDP amounted to $ 4.10 trillion, exceeding Japan's GDP ($ 4.01 trillion).

The American state gives way only to the United States as a whole ($ 29.18 trillion), China ($ 18.74 trillion) and Germany ($ 4.65 trillion) – according to the data of the International Monetary Fund cited on the California authorities' website.
“California not only keeps pace at the world – we set the pace” – he emphasized the news in the statement. “We are celebrating success, but we are aware that our progress is threatened by the reckless customs policy of the current federal administration (US President Donald Trump)” – he added. “The California economy drives the country and must be protected” – noted the prominent politician of the Democratic Party, mentioned – as BBC reminded – among potential presidential candidates in the 2028 election.
In mid -April, California, as the first state in the USA, filed a lawsuit questioning a series of duties introduced by Trump in foreign trade, arguing that they are harmful to consumers and entrepreneurs, and are also unlawful, because the constitution is a congress, not administration, clearly entitled to imposing customs.
According to the IMF in 2024, the economy of California grew at a rate of 6 percent, i.e. each of the three largest economies in the world faster (for the US it was 5.3 percent, 2.6 percent for China, and 2.9 percent for Germany). The average growth of GDP of the American state in 2021-2024 amounted to 7.5 percent. According to preliminary data, in 2026, California can surpass India, which today occupy fifth place on the list, and their GDP is $ 3.9 trillion.
