Titus Ice

On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of St. Titus of the Wonderworker, who lived in the 9th century.

The nickname of the “ice” St. Titus received the people because the rivers and the lakes are finally opened on his day. It was customary to carefully observe this process: if the ice is drowned, it will fall to the bottom, then you need to prepare for the difficult year. If hollow water spills, you can wait for good herbs and early mowing. And if the ice has not yet gone to Titus, it means that this spring fish will be caught badly. We followed Titus and the birds. If the quail screams, there will be a lot of bread and a lot of grass.

This day was also called a wiseless. The stocks of grain ended, and people began to interrupt from bread to kvass. On this occasion they said: “It was once every life on a shovel, but now they survived-the legs were crushed”; “Who has nothing, but we have more than that.” Despite difficult times, the grain was not touched for sowing. It was a taboo: “Sell a cow, and sow the field with good seed”; “Hungry yourself, but do not deprive the field with grain.”

For merchants, on the contrary, this date was called “Barysh-day”. They tried to celebrate him as noisily as possible – this promised good profits throughout the year.

Often, Titus Day falls on the period of Great Lent. This explains many jokes, sayings and sayings about Titus. “Our Titus and Prodigi in the post”; “Drunk Titus Psalms repeats”; “Our Titus has both Pito and Bito,” there are only some of them.
