Why the subway between Unirii and Tineretului Square circulates slowly. The official explanation of Metrorex

Metrorex announced that, until April 18, 2025, there will be works to modernize and replace the track devices between the youth stations and the Unirii 2 Square, on Magistral II. The works are scheduled to take place exclusively at night, to minimize the impact on the train traffic program, the company said, specifying that “speed restrictions” will be applied only between the two stations on this bus.
“Between April 7 and 18, 2025, the train traffic will take place normally during the day, with speed restrictions applied only on line II, between the youth stations and the Unirii 2 Square, which can produce minor changes of the traffic intervals,” Metrorex explained, in a press release issued a few days ago.
The company mentions that these interventions are necessary to improve the conditions of movement of the subway trains and to increase the safety.
According to Metrorex, the interventions made by the company's own staff “have a high degree of complexity” and consist among others, in:
- Replacement of metal parts in the composition of the path exchanger;
- Replacement of wooden crossings with polymer composite traverses;
- Replacement of broken stone prism and other adjacent materials;
- Performing the stabilization burea.

At the beginning of 2024, there were maintenance work on the subway rails, on the section between Unirii 2 and Tineretului, recalls Bucharest bulletin.
The rails are replaced when they reach their “bearing capacity”, he had stated, at that time, Metroz.
Each changed rail has a length of 120 meters and a weight of 7,200 kilograms. In total, the weight of the replaced rails is 43,200 kg, and the length is 720 meters, wrote in the statement at that time.
The teams on the field consisted of about 20 specialists, who used specific machines, including heavy track machinery, cutting and drilling machines, tools and devices for restoring the continuity of the path.
“The action to replace the rail on the subway is cyclical,” according to Metrorex.
