Ivan Climacus
On this day, the Orthodox Church celebrates the memory of John the Lesser-the Christian Theologian and the Philosopher, the abbot of the Sinai Monastery, who lived in the 6-7th centuries. John is the author of the “ladder” (from the Old Slavonic “staircase”) – a kind of leadership to moral self -improvement. In his work, John presented 30 virtues in the form of steps, according to which a Christian should ascend to the ideal.
On the day of honoring Ivan (John), Russian people baked ritual cookies – ladders. Two “sausages” rolled from the dough, put them parallel to each other, and pies were laid on top instead of steps. It was supposed to bake through the ladder for each family member – it was believed that this would bring household health. Also, as usual, this cookies were brought to the church, where they sprinkled with holy water.
On Ivan Climacus, many were afraid to walk around the yard. They said that on this day the brownie is “furious” and does not recognize his home, and therefore can harm them. They explained it differently. In some areas they thought that an old skin was leaving the brownie, in others they believed that he was going to marry a witch. Be that as it may, the brownie courageous all night until the first roosters, so with a sunset the peasants locked all the cattle into the stable, and they themselves sat in the hut, not even approaching the windows.
