Volodimir Zelenski said on Wednesday night that Ukrainian intelligence services have information about 155 Chinese citizens fighting for the Russian army against Ukraine, reports Reuters.
His statements were given in a discussion with the press after the capture of two Chinese citizens in eastern Ukraine. He said he hopes that the United States would talk to Moscow about the conduct of Chinese citizens on the battlefield.
Zelenski said that Russia recruits Chinese citizens through social networks, that Chinese officials are aware of this and that Ukraine's security service has prepared lists, birth data and Russian military units in which they were assigned.
Ukraine is trying to evaluate if the recruits receive instructions from Beijing, he added.
“The Chinese problem is serious,” Zelenski said. “There are 155 people with names and data from Passports – 155 Chinese citizens fighting Ukrainians on the territory of Ukraine. We gather information and believe that there are more, many more.”
Zelensk said that Ukraine is ready to change Chinese citizens captured with Ukrainian military now in detention.
Russia “pulls” China in his war with Ukraine, Zelenski accuses
On Wednesday, China's Foreign Ministry rejected the remarks of Zelenski as several Chinese citizens are “unfounded” on the front line alongside the Russians.
“Ukraine should look correctly to China's efforts and constructive role in searching for a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis,” said the ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, in a regular press conference.
China checks the situation with Ukraine, he said, adding that his government has always asked its citizens to avoid armed conflict areas and “especially to avoid participation in military operations of any party.”
